Technique of the Week: Action Shots

Today we went to play disc golf. I decided it would be a fun time to try out different continuous shot settings. Here are some results:

Plus, when you are shooting in continuous shoot mode, you can capture some pretty cool random faces in a series of not so great or in-focus pictures. Like this one that Luke shot of me:

Also, I know last night I complaining about the heat and the lack of fall-like weather in the beginning of September. Well, last night something wonderful happened, and this morning was gorgeous. There were blue skies, and we even saw some hints of autumn:

Cool things that I learned today about my camera:

It can shoot in black and white (learned by reading the camera manual).
Changing the aperture, shutter speed and ISO can work wonders for your pictures (learned by reading a book on photography, given to me by Mom T). Observe below.

The sky was beautiful tonight after the sunset, so I decided to try to take a picture of it. The first picture, with the settings my camera was already on (aperture f/8.0, shutter speed 1/125s and ISO 100) and no flash turned out like this:
Normally, I would have just moved closer and tried to capture it with the flash. However, the flash would have highlighted the things on top of the shelves in front of the window, rather than the sky. So instead, adjusted the aperture to f/6.3, shutter speed to 1/40s and ISO to 800 and this was the turn out:
Since it got better and not worse, I adjusted it one more time to the lowest settings, f/5.6, 1/4s and ISO 1600 and the turn out was as follows:
Ah-may-zing. No flash used at all, and yet the colors are vibrant. It's not perfect, I'm still figuring it out, and hoping that at some point I'll be able to just look at a scene and fix the settings to the perfect picture. I'm also not 100% sure what all of that means yet. I know that it has something to do with the amount of light that can hit the lens, and how long you expose the lens to the light. But anyways, I thought that was pretty cool. I'll definitely be exploring expose some more in the coming weeks. Sorry if all of that technical stuff bores you. I just find it pretty fascinating.

So that's technique of the week for now! Enjoy the rest of the weekend!
