It is for freedom.

Last weekend Whitney, Uzma, Luke and I headed down to the Museum of American History and took a look at documents by Abraham Lincoln, including the Emancipation Proclamation. It was pretty amazing. There were several quotes up and around that Abraham Lincoln had said, and I thought this one was a pretty good one:

I have always thought that men should be free; but if any should be slaves it should be first those who desire it for themselves, and secondly those who desire it for others. Whenever [I] hear any one, arguing for slavery I feel a strong impulse to see it tried on him personally.

I don't have a lot of thoughts to put out there right now. Really, I'm just taking a little break from applying to jobs. I've thought a lot about slavery lately, thinking through human trafficking, buying cheap goods and also in myself--what I'm held captive too. I was thinking about why we should really care about slavery and what Biblical reasons there are. Besides slavery being a huge social justice issue I think one reason is that freedom is obviously very important to God. Over and over in the New Testament He uses the images of prisoners and slaves being set free by His love. Obviously when He speaks in the New Testament He's talking of freedom from sin. But I think there is something to be said for the fact that the word freedom is used and the imagery of no longer being slaves is also important. And He wants this freedom for everyone.

Every.Single.Person.

Free from slavery under others and to ourselves.

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free...

These are just a few thoughts. Maybe I'll write some more later. I've been learning a lot lately, about many things, and the opportunities for procrastination are plentiful.

Oh, yeah, they fixed our heat this morning.
